Members’ Forum Newsletter #11 January 2023

A new year has arrived and with it another ISCA Pubs newsletter. We have a number of very interesting contributions for this issue. The first one is a report of the 10th Annual Meeting of The Language and Social Interaction Working Group (LANSI) which was held last October in New York City. This event included a large number of paper presentations and two invited plenary speakers, Doug Maynard and Candy Goodwin. In the report, you can find out more about LANSI’s background and mission as well as the 2022 conference. Another conference report you can find in this issue is one about the ICOP-L2 conference which took place in Barcelona last September. This conference showcased research from all over the world related to interactional competence in L2 contexts. In this report, researchers from Tampere University tell us about the learning opportunities and the practical and theoretical aspects that the conference presented. Last, but not least, Ariel Vásquez Carranza has contributed a piece for the Intercultural Matters section. In this article, he tells us about the book entitled “Sociolingüística para la Enseñanza de Lenguas” (Sociolinguistics for Language Teaching) which he edited and was published last year. You will find an introduction to sociolinguistics and language teaching as well as intercultural views about it. Ariel also tells us about the process of editing this book and offers a link to the publication which is open access. We also have an appealing announcement from the University of York, so make sure to check it out.

LANSI 2022

Sponsored by the Applied Linguistics and TESOL program and a number of other generous entities at Teachers College, Columbia University, the 10th annual meeting of The Language and Social Interaction Working Group (LANSI) was held on October 14 and 15, 2022, in New York City. The opportunity to finally hold the historically intimate meeting in-person after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic was decidedly welcomed by all, especially as LANSI celebrated its milestone tenth conference since its inception.

A safe L2 conference haven

ICOP-L2 stands for “interactional competences and practices in a second language”, and the conference of the same name is all about socially situated language use and second language development. The third iteration of ICOP-L2, which took place in Barcelona in the beginning of September 2022, was a welcome opportunity to finally get together with a lot of like-minded people, after a long pandemic-related break. .

Sociolinguistics for language teaching by Ariel Vásquez Carranza

The present entry is about an editorial project that seeks to contribute to the  professionalisation of the language teacher specifically in the sociolinguistic domain; in other words, its main objective is to educate language teachers about sociolinguistics. The project is entitled Sociolingüística para la enseñanza de lenguas (Sociolinguistics for language teaching) that came out in May 2022, published by the University of Guadalajara, Mexico. To my knowledge, the book is the first collection of introductory chapters to a diversity of sociolinguistic themes written in Spanish that is particularly addressed to service and pre-service language teachers.
