Embodied Syntax Network Conference

Yuval Geva authored a comprehensive report on the “Embodied Syntax Network Conference” held at Linköping University in September 2023. The conference united researchers exploring the interconnection between language and the body, shedding light on how bodily actions intertwine with linguistic practices, offering a fresh perspective on syntax as an embodied phenomenon. Plenaries highlighted the systematic use of bodily cues in multi-unit turns and introduced innovative approaches to integrating the body into grammar descriptions. The event sparked discussions on the nature of syntax and the role of the body in language, emphasizing the practical implications of the “embodied turn” in linguistic research. Read more…

Announcements

Full Schegloff Course Data now available

At the business meeting of ICCA 2014 at UCLA, John Heritage announced that Emanuel Schegloff had kindly donated video recordings, assignments, transcripts, and data from his Conversational Structures I and II courses to ISCA for publication, at which point Schegloff turned and grinned at the cheering crowd to warn us: “Yo:::u’ll be S↑OrE:::e,”.

The ISCA Publications Committee Data Team is very pleased to announce that we have finally finished pseudonymizing and redacting the data to make them available, along with the Schegloff Course videos, for all ISCA members to download. You can use them for teaching, research, and even in publications.

This is a fantastic resource for all EMCA scholars, as it gives us access to the data that we have seen so many times in Schegloff’s work and will make it far easier to follow along with the analyses while watching the Schegloff Course videos.

You can find the Schegloff Course Data in the ‘members only’ section of the ISCA website, and remember, for those needing access to these data but without the funds to join ISCA at the moment, we have many discounts and can even offer free special memberships for those in need.

Encyclopedia of Terminology for CA/IL now published

We’re pleased to announce the official publication of the Encyclopedia of Terminology for Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics (eds. Alexandra Gubina, Elliott M. Hoey, and Chase Wesley Raymond), an ISCA-supported online resource for students and scholars of CA/IL, publicly available on the EMCA Wiki page. https://emcawiki.net/Encyclopedia_of_Terminology_for_CA_and_IL

Encyclopedias and glossaries are widespread across various fields and methods, and serve as immensely valuable resources. Given the extent to which the EMCA/IL community has expanded over the years—both terminologically as well as geographically—we hope this resource will be useful for both novices (especially for those who do not have systematic CA/IL training) and advanced practitioners alike.

The Encyclopedia currently has nearly 100 peer-reviewed entries authored by dozens of authors, including many authorities on the topics they describe. The editors continue to solicit contributions from more CA/IL scholars, both established and upcoming, and so it will continue to grow over the years into a (we hope) comprehensive resource.
