Featured research squib

First, we delve into the fascinating study by Sam Schirm and Sophia Fiedler, which examines the development of grammar-for-interaction in second language (L2) German. Through longitudinal analysis, the research reveals how linguistic structures such as “Ich weiß nicht” (“I don’t know”) and “keine Ahnung” (“no clue”) evolve in the speech of L2 learners, shedding light on the complex interplay between language-specific resources and interactional competence. Conference reports

New Data Session

Finally, we introduce the DokGF Forschungswerkstatt, a platform for German-speaking PhD students to explore CA and IL through monthly online data sessions. The UCLA Center for Language, Interaction, and Culture (CLIC) is happy to offer its first summer workshop to be held from August the 4th through the 24th, 2024 on the UCLA campus in the city of Los Angeles. The workshop will explore ways to analyze language use in social interaction and learn how social interactional and usage-based approaches to language can be applied to language teaching and learning.
