Members’ Forum Newsletter #19 September 2025

Verónica González-Temer and Sam Schirm

Whether it is the beginning of a new academic year in the Northern Hemisphere or the start of a new term in the South, this season marks a fresh chapter for many in our community. Over the past months, there have also been some exciting events in EMCAIL. In this shorter newsletter issue, we bring you reports and reflections from two conferences at opposite ends of the globe.

Diverse approaches to studying action in pragmatics

The 19th conference of the International Pragmatics Association (IPrA2025) conference brought together researchers from across the world to Brisbane, Australia, with the goal of bringing action back into the focus of research on pragmatics across disciplines. In their report, Chilmeg Elden and Zhiyi Lu not only tell us about the breadth of theoretical and methodological approaches present at the conference, they also reflect on their experiences as a conference attendees and student volunteers: as workshop participants, as presenters, as audience members, and as members of an international research community celebrating its 40th anniversary. Read the report here.

Welcoming Ph.Ds to present their research

The York Conference on Conversation Analysis (YorCCA) 2025 offers Ph.D. students working in CA a welcoming environment in which to present their research to other Ph.D. as well as established CA researchers. The Ph.Ds at YorCCA 2025 presented on such diverse contexts as healthcare interactions, classroom interactions, craft workshops and natural encounters. In her report from the conference, Sanaa Hyder covers not only conference’s presentations but also the insightful discussions and debates that emerged following the presentations.
